In modeling the noise propagation in a duct of a ducted fan engine, the authors needed the boundary condition satisfied by the acoustic pressure on a lined duct wall in the presence of flow. The result in the form used by the authors was derived by M.K. Myers who presented a formal derivation of a related result by K. Taylor. A good review of the subject can be found in this document. Here a brief and simple derivation of the acoustic boundary condition of Myers is given.

In this paper we address the mathematical problem of noise generation from high speed moving surfaces. The problem we are solving is the linear wave equation with sources on a moving surface. The Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) equation as well as the governing equation for deriving the Kirchhoff formula for moving surfaces are both this type of partial differential equation. We give a new exact solution of this problem here in closed form which is valid for subsonic and supersonic motion of the surface but it is particularly suitable for supersonically moving surfaces. This new solution is the simplest of all high speed formulations of Langley and is denoted formulation 4 following the tradition of numbering of our major results for the prediction of the noise of rotating blades. We show that for a smooth surface moving at supersonic speed, our solution has only removable singularities. Thus it can be used for numerical work.

The calculated pressure field in the inlet region is decomposed into classical infinite-duct, modes, which are then used in either a hybrid finite-element /Kirchhoff surface method or boundary integral equation method to calculate the far field noise. Comparisons with experimental data are presented, including rotor wake surveys and far field sound pressure levels for 2 blade passage frequency (BPF) tones.

In this proof of concept research, a computational method was developed for predicting the sound field created by the scattering of ducted fan engine noise by a blended wing-body (BWB). It was assumed that all acoustic processes were linear and time harmonic with excitation frequency co. Inflow effects were neglected and no penetration boundary conditions were applied to the engine nacelle and BWB surfaces. A scattering approach was adopted in which the total acoustic field is written as the sum of known incident (from the engine duct) and unknown scattered parts. We further assume that the incident field is independent of the scattered field. Application of the above conditions to the equations of linearized acoustics yields the Helmholtz equation (reduced wave equation) for the scattered pressure with Neumann boundary conditions.

This document describes the usage of the ducted fan noise prediction program TBIEM3D (Thin duct - Boundary Integral Equation Method - 3 Dimensional). A scattering approach is adopted in which the acoustic pressure field is split into known incident and unknown scattered parts. The scattering of fan-generated noise by a finite length circular cylinder in a uniform flow field is considered. The fan noise is modeled by a collection of spinning point thrust dipoles. The program, based on a Boundary Integral Equation Method (BIEM), calculates circumferential modal coefficients of the acoustic pressure at user-specified field locations. The duct interior can be of the hard wall type or lined. The duct liner is axisymmetric, locally reactive, and can be uniform or axially segmented. TBIEM3D is written in the FORTRAN programming language. Input to TBIEM3D is minimal and consists of geometric and kinematic parameters. Discretization and numerical parameters are determined automatically by the code. Several examples are presented to demonstrate TBIEM3D capabilities.

Two formulations are utilized by ASSPIN: (1) one is used for subsonic portions of the propeller blade; and (2) the second is used for transonic and supersonic regions on the blade. Switching between the two formulations is done automatically. ASSPIN incorporates advanced blade geometry and surface pressure modelling, adaptive observer time grid strategies, and contains enhanced numerical algorithms that result in reduced computational time. In addition, the ability to treat the nonaxial inflow case has been included.
